Synthetic Oil vs. Regular Oil: What’s the Difference?

If this is your first time owning a Mercedes-Benz and bringing it in for Mercedes-Benz oil service, you may be wondering what synthetic oil is and how it compares to regular oil. Synthetic oil is made with a base oil, powder additives, and a carrier oil, which helps facilitate an even distribution of the additives. Similar to conventional oil, synthetic oil is made from refined crude oils – the main difference is actually the amount of refining that occurs. Synthetic oil is refined, distilled, purified, and broken down at the molecular level, creating numerous advantages over conventional oil:

  • Fewer deposits
  • A purer final product
  • The uniform molecule sizes help prevent friction
  • Additives help keep the engine clean
  • Better performance in extreme climates (like the intense summer heat in San Antonio)
