Everyone knows the Mercedes-Benz logo, meaning most of our San Antonio customers can recognize a Mercedes-Benz vehicle from blocks away. But what is the meaning behind that distinct Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star? And what about the Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo? Why is it so different? You have questions. We have answers. Let’s take a look at the automaker’s history.
The history of the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star goes back farther than the company itself. Gottlieb Daimler helped to found the company known as Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) in the 19th century. In 1909, the company executives decided it was time for a new logo. Gottlieb’s sons, Paul and Adolf, recalled a 3-pointed star that their father had drawn on a postcard to their mother in 1872. He had drawn the star to mark the location of the family home, saying that the star would someday shine over the DMG factory as a sign of prosperity. The executives liked the idea and adopted the star as part of the company logo. We think it’s pretty cool that the Mercedes-Benz logo meaning is rooted deep into Daimler family history.
Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft and another automobile company, named Benz & Cie, merged in 1926. The new company decided to combine “Mercedes”, which was the name of one of DMG’s owners, with the “Benz” part of Benz & Cie to create the new company name. They combined the DMG star with a laurel that was part of the Benz & Cie logo, to create the new Mercedes-Benz logo. The laurel would later be replaced with the circle you see on the logo now.
According to Mercedes-Benz, it symbolizes the utilization of universal motorization by Mercedes-Benz to dominate the land, air, and sea (the three points). We think it means luxury, quality, and precision engineering in the minds of most San Antonio drivers.
There are two halves to the Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo. The left half is the coat of arms of Affalterbach, Germany, the city where the Mercedes-Benz headquarters are located. On the right half is a cam, a valve, and a valve spring. These components picture the high standards of engineering that goes into building the Mercedes-Benz AMG® engine.
